In view of rising crude oil prices and increasing rates of greenhouses gases released in the air, it has become necessary to promote the production and use of biofuels such as biodiesel and others as alternative fuels.
 On this basis, in order to implement national strategies for sustainable and integrated waste management, particularly the strategy on strengthening the conversion and reuse of waste by recycling and on developing the production of alternative energies like biofuels and others, and pursuant to the decision of the Council of Ministers of 14 March 2006 on alternative energies stipulating the creation of a pilot production unit of biodiesel by conversion of used cooking oil, the National Agency for Waste Management organized a collection of used cooking oil in view of their treatment by private companies and their use as raw material for biofuel production. 30 small enterprises received specifications to collect such waste and 42 were approved to set up facilities of primary treatment of such wastes by filtration in order to export them in a first stage until a company is set up with a license to produce biodiesel. |
| To better organize the collection of used oils in tourism businesses and in coordination with the departments in the Ministry of Tourism, a joint memorandum was issued encouraging hotel and tourist restaurant managers to make a sound management of their used cooking oil and to deliver it to the approved enterprises for treatment. |
| In addition, a private company applied for setting up a biodiesel production facility. The company is currently finishing the procedures for an environmental impact study. On the other hand, ANGED is organizing the collection of used cooking oil from the ministries and public institutions holding them. |
| A master plan was prepared for a better organization of this activity. It aims at establishing the number of collectors and the optimal amount to be collected by region with the aim of ensuring the profitability and sustainability of micro-enterprises operating in the sector. |
