General framework
A budget of 6 million Dollars has been allocated for promoting optimal technical and operational methods of PCB and health waste management in Tunisia as part of a grant from the Global Environment Fund (GEF) and the World Bank. |
Project goals
The project mainly aims at finding optimal technical and operational management methods of such waste from its source of emanation to its treatment on the site, and at implementing a national strategy of sustainable management of such wastes.

Preparation of the technical-economic study on :
Promoting waste management of health activities in the country ;
Developing a management plan for waste and equipment containing PCB in the country; |
This study on promoting waste management of health activities in the country includes 3 stages:
Step 1 : assessment of the present methods of health waste management in Greater Tunis and Medenine as pilot areas : Greater Tunis because it produces around 40% of the total quantity of such waste in the whole country and the governorate of Medenine for its touristic features and the distances between cities.
Step 2 : establishing a strategy of waste management of health activities in the country ;
Step 3 : preparing a feasibility study of investment in the management of such waste and developing terms of reference for the GEF project. |
The study for a management plan for waste and equipment containing PCB in the country includes 3 stages:
Step 1 : collection, inventory and assessment of all equipment and waste containing PCB belonging to the Tunisian Company for Gas and Electricity (STEG) and to public institutions;
Step 2 : socio-economic feasibility study :
Developing a plan of integrated management of equipments containing PCB belonging to the Tunisian Company for Gas and Electricity -STEG ;
Developing a plan of integrated management of equipments containing PCB belonging to public institutions.
Step 3 : assessment of the regulatory and institutional framework of PCB management in Tunisia, and drawing up terms of reference for presenting the project to the Global Environment Facility-GEF. |
All the above-mentioned studies as part of this project were developed in accordance with World Bank guidelines and requirements and with the Tunisian regulations and procedures, especially the feasibility studies on management of respectively health waste and PCB in Tunisia and the impact study of the Environmental and Social Framework (ISESF) of the project.
