In recent decades, Tunisia has achieved significant economic growth. This has resulted in a large increase of special industrial waste. According to studies on the subject, the quantity of waste from industrial activities in different sectors is estimated at 150 thousand tons per year.
Non-chlorinated waste oil is a big part of it. It is recycled in a refining plant in Bizerte. Most other industrial wastes can be treated in Jradou. They may consist of sludge from the oil sector, from water/hydrocarbon separators and from treatment of industrial used water, of liquid waste from degreasing, of formatting and processing metal surfaces, of packages with residues of hazardous substances of pesticides and spoiled pharmaceutical products, of slag and contaminated sand and foundry molds etc.

puce_flech_1_.jpg      The success of sustainable policy in special industrial waste management in Tunisia is reflected through key figures. They emerge from the administrative tools for monitoring and reporting in waste management and require long term assessment (called ‘indicators’).

The four indicators showing progress in the management of hazardous waste in Tunisia are the following :

1. Total production of special industrial waste in Tunisia;
2. Collection and disposal of special industrial waste in Tunisia by treatment plant ;
3. Internal storage of special industrial waste in Tunisian companies ; and
4. Export of special industrial waste not treatable locally by country of destination.
