The quantity of nationally produced waste from the health sector is of around 16000 tons/year; 7000 of which are considered hazardous waste and 9000 non-hazardous.

Waste from health activities are any material produced by a manufacturing process or any use of substances or products in health facilities and, generally, any item carried to disposal or intended for disposal. These wastes are generated in the course of diagnosis or monitoring activities, and by preventive, curative and relief measures in the field of human medicine. Wastes generated by conservation of remains, research, teaching and industrial production in the health sector are also included in health waste.

Hazardous health waste include biological and chemical wastes such as pharmaceutical wastes and flammable or explosive wastes, pointed instruments (syringes…) or sharp, decaying, and radioactive wastes
